There's a common assumption that equipment rental yards are contractor-only operations. That's not how NorthPoint works. We rent to homeowners, property owners, and DIYers on the same terms as the contractors who come through our doors every day.
What matters to us is that you have a legitimate project, you understand the basic operation of the machine, and you return the equipment in good condition. We'll walk you through the machine at pickup, answer your questions, and make sure you leave the yard confident — not guessing.
Most of our fleet is available to homeowners. Common rentals for residential projects include:
Not sure which machine fits your project? Call us and describe what you're trying to do. We'll point you in the right direction — and talk you out of renting something bigger than you actually need.
New Hampshire properties keep our homeowner rental business busy year-round. Here are the jobs we see most often:
Gravel driveway work. Long driveways are a fact of life in the Lakes Region. Frost heaves, washouts, and ruts are a fact of spring. A skid steer or compact track loader with a bucket can regrade, top off, and reshape a driveway in a day — work that would take a crew with hand tools a week.
Loam spreading and lawn prep. Putting in a new lawn or repairing a section that got torn up over the winter? A skid steer can spread and grade loam far faster than any wheelbarrow approach.
Stump and brush removal. A mini excavator or skid steer with the right attachment can pull stumps and clear brush that would otherwise require an expensive specialty crew.
Drainage and trenching. NH's clay soils and heavy spring runoff create drainage headaches for homeowners every year. A mini excavator or trencher gets the ditch dug and the pipe in the ground in a fraction of the time.
Shed, garage, and addition prep. Clearing and leveling a site before a structure goes up is one of the most common homeowner equipment rentals we see. A compact track loader handles the cut-and-fill work efficiently even on uneven terrain.
Post-winter cleanup. Whether it's pushing back material that shifted over the winter or cleaning up a yard that took a beating from plowing, a skid steer turns a weekend project into a morning.
Renting equipment at NorthPoint as a homeowner is straightforward. Here's what you'll need:
You do not need a commercial license, a contractor's account, or prior rental history. First-time renters are welcome.
Some experience helps, but it's not a hard requirement for most equipment. Skid steers and compact track loaders have a learning curve, but most people get comfortable with the controls within the first hour of operation. Mini excavators are similarly approachable for basic digging and trenching work.
What we ask is that you're honest with yourself about the scope of your project. If you're doing a simple gravel driveway top-off, a skid steer is a realistic one-day rental for a capable homeowner. If you're planning major site excavation on a slope, that's a different conversation — and we'll have it with you before you drive off our lot.
At pickup, our staff will walk you through the machine's controls, safety features, and operating basics. Take your time, ask questions, and don't leave until you feel ready.
NorthPoint offers a Rental Protection Plan (RPP) at 15% of the rental rate. For homeowners renting equipment for the first time, we strongly recommend it. The RPP covers accidental damage during the rental period — and on a gravel driveway, a tight backyard, or a rocky NH hillside, things can happen even to careful operators.
It's a relatively small add-on that removes a significant financial risk from the equation. Worth it.
Most construction equipment needs to be transported on a trailer. If you have a truck and a trailer rated for the machine's weight, you can pick up directly from our Tilton or Plymouth locations. Our staff will help with tie-down and confirm your setup is safe before you leave.
If you don't have a trailer — or just don't want the hassle — NorthPoint offers equipment delivery and pickup. Delivery is free within 5 miles of any of our locations. Beyond that, fees apply based on distance. For a homeowner doing a one-day or weekend project, delivery often makes more sense than renting a trailer on top of the machine.
Our minimum rental term is one full day. Most homeowner projects fall into one of these categories:
New Hampshire weather has a way of rearranging schedules. If there's any chance your project runs into a second day, a weekend rental almost always makes more sense than a daily rate.
NorthPoint is a five-location New Hampshire operation. We're not a national chain — we're local, and we know the terrain, the seasons, and the kinds of projects homeowners in this region deal with every year.
We treat homeowners the same as contractors. Same machines, same service, same straight talk about what you actually need for your job.
We'll help you pick the right equipment. Call us, describe your project, and we'll tell you exactly what machine makes sense — nothing more, nothing less.
We prep our machines for NH conditions. Cold starts, mud season, wet spring ground — our fleet is maintained for what New Hampshire actually throws at equipment.
Delivery available. Free within 5 miles of any location. Straightforward fees beyond that.
NorthPoint Equipment Rentals serves homeowners and property owners across central and northern New Hampshire, including:
Q: Do I need a contractor's license to rent equipment at NorthPoint?
No. A valid driver's license and a payment method are all you need. Homeowners rent from us every day.
Q: What if I've never operated a skid steer or excavator before?
We'll walk you through the machine at pickup. Most homeowners get comfortable with the controls quickly. If your project is straightforward, first-time operation is very manageable. If it's complex or on challenging terrain, talk to us first — we'll give you an honest assessment.
Q: Can I have the equipment delivered to my property?
Yes. Delivery is free within 5 miles of any NorthPoint location. Beyond that, fees apply based on distance. Call us for a quote.
Q: What is the minimum rental period?
One full day. Weekend and weekly rentals are also available and often make more sense for homeowner projects where weather or scope might add time to the job.
Q: Is the Rental Protection Plan worth it for a homeowner?
Yes — especially if you're operating equipment for the first time. At 15% of the rental rate, it covers accidental damage and removes a significant financial risk from the equation.
Your project doesn't require a contractor. It requires the right equipment and a rental yard that will set you up to succeed. NorthPoint Equipment Rentals has both.
